Shape of Training
Many of you will be familiar with the publication in October 2013 of "The Shape of Training Review".
The review was led by economist Professor David Greenaway and sponsors included Health Education England (HEE), the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC), the General Medical Council (GMC), the Medical Schools Council (MSC), Conference of Postgraduate Medical Deans of the UK (COPMeD), NHS Education Scotland (NES) and representatives from Northern Ireland and Wales. The review sought to "Look at potential reforms to the structure of postgraduate medical education and training across the UK". The report can be accessed through the SoT website: http://www.shapeoftraining.co.uk/ This review is of critical interest, not only to those in training but to all UK doctors, as the (rather non-specific and wide-ranging) recommendations of the report have the potential to change the healthcare landscape significantly.
On behalf of UK cardiology trainees the BJCA Council issued the following response to the Cardiology SAC in November 2013. Having considered their own position, and the BJCA response, the cardiology SAC sent its own response, and that of the BJCA Council, to the GMC and RCP in February 2014.
The BMA has now also issued a formal response:
http://bma.org.uk/working-for-change/negotiating-for-the-profession/nhs-education-and-training/shape-of-training-review We are determined to ensure that all cardiology trainees are aware of this process and its implications and we would welcome any comments from our members (bjca@bcs.com).
With best wishes,
Dr Abhishek Joshi
