Dr Michael Stewart Dr Michael Stewart trained in medicine in Edinburgh, qualifying in 1986. After a period of research in Edinburgh studying ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, heart failure and new echocardiography techniques, he moved to Glasgow as specialist registrar and later senior registrar in Cardiology. He was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist to South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust in 1996, Clinical Director for Cardiology from 2000-2006 and has been Chief of Cardiothoracic Services since 2009. His major clinical interests are in cardiac imaging, the non-invasive assessment of coronary artery disease and heart failure, and cardiac therapeutics. He is the clinical lead for the Cardiac Investigations Unit, and has developed stress echo, myocardial perfusion scintigraphy and cardiac CT services at South Tees. He was a long-standing member of the local Drug & Therapeutics committee, and is an expert advisor to the UK Medicines Health Regulatory Authority and the European Medicines Agency, and a member of the Joint Formulary Committee responsible for producing the BNF monthly updates and annual review of print edition Like most cardiologists, he has been involved in training junior doctors in cardiology throughout his professional career, lecturing regularly in topics including cardiac imaging, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and hypertension, cardiac therapeutics, and peri-operative assessment of cardiac problems. He was Clinical Lead for the North of England Cardiovascular Network from 2007-2009 and the Training Programme Director for Cardiology in the Northern Deanery from 2008-2012. He is a current member of the Cardiology Specialist Advisory Committee and has been the SAC lead for Curriculum Development and Workplace Based Assessment since 2013.
