Current BCS Education
BCS National Training Day - 6 December 2010
BCS Education Strategy Education is one of the defining strategies of the British Cardiovascular Society. The members of the BCS and its specialist Affiliated Groups are uniquely placed to develop and deliver education for trainees as well as for trained cardiologists. Many high quality educational activities are already in place through the BCS Annual Conference & Exhibition, the joint Cardiology Review Course with the Mayo Clinic and through the specialist meetings of the Affiliated Groups. Also, there are many industry sponsored activities which fulfil additional training needs. Locally, in individual deaneries there are well developed training programmes for trainees. Not only does the BCS feel its role is to bring these activities together, coordinate them and accredit their value as educational resources but it also plans to identify and fill the gaps in training and educational needs.
Education will generally fall into three main categories, Knowledge, Skills and Professionalism and the BCS Education Strategy has been based around these areas. The task of delivering this strategy will be through the Communication & Education Committee and its Education subgroup, with representation from all the Affiliated Groups and Industry. Information relating to all educational activities will be available on the website. The website will form a focus for capturing current available educational activities and will provide a map of educational activities linked to the cardiology curriculum. The website will promote educational activities which fulfil the needs of our trainees and the continuing professional development of our trained members.
Trainee Education Although the BCS does not have a mandate for training, which lies with the respective Deaneries, the knowledge and expertise of our members and Affiliated Groups allow us to develop high quality, curriculum based education which will ensure training is delivered to the highest standard to trainees and trained members. With support from the Specialty Advisory Committee (SAC) in Cardiology, the BCS and its Affiliated Groups will coordinate existing educational events, mapped to the curriculum, develop additional educational tools to fill any gaps and support the Deaneries in the delivery of the education agenda. This will ensure comprehensive coverage of the entire curriculum and also ensure it is disseminated nationally to enable consistency and equity of access.
Education for the Trained Cardiologist Although trainee education is a key component of our education strategy, it is important to recognise and cater for the continuing educational needs of trained cardiologists. This is especially important with the future requirements around revalidation and relicensing where the BCS plans to have a leading role, providing both education and an infrastructure to facilitate this process.
