Knowledge Based Assessment in Cardiology
The KBA is intended to assess a cardiology StR's knowledge of the core areas of cardiovascular medicine. The required knowledge is set out in the specialty training curriculum for cardiology. Appropriate sources of information include general text-books e.g. the ESC text book of cardiovascular medicine, teaching sections in academic journals e.g. Education in Heart, and published guidelines, e.g. ESC clinical practice guidelines. These resources are not intended as an exhaustive reading list just as examples and trainees will be expected to have developed their knowledge using the wide variety of sources available.
The KBA is an obligatory part of Cardiology Training in the UK for those enrolled on the 2007 curriculum. It should be noted that the KBA exam will only be one part of the assessment of Cardiology training for StRs and will sit alongside the WPBAs (workplace based assessments) as part of the ARCP (annual review of competence progression).
The cost of the exam is solely to cover the administrative expenses of the BCS including room hire, computer hire, software costs, exam production, marking and analysis. We are pleased that the free use of BCS facilities and the support of the ESC in question writing have helped keep the exam fees well below that of other comparable specialty exams (£800-1000). We will at all times endeavour to keep costs to a minimum whilst maintaining the exam as a reliable assessment of knowledge for higher specialist trainees in cardiology.
