ACCEA - Submission process for Clinical Excellence Awards 2011
18 August 2010
ALL ORDINARY MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH CARDIOVASCULAR SOCIETY
Dear Colleague
Clinical Excellence Awards - 2011 Round.
The Clinical Excellence Awards round for 2011 has started. The BCS requires all submissions by 6 September 2010. The current Awards (2010) will be announced at the beginning of August, therefore submissions for the 2011 round can be made after that date.
I intend to make the 2011 process as open and as fair as possible and will try to ensure that the BCS and the Royal Colleges work together and in the interests of potential award holders. A number of cardiologists have been successful on the RCP list, even if they do not make the BCS shortlist (the BCS has input into the RCP rankings and works hard to ensure that cardiologists are supported through the RCP).
The BCS supports the principle of self-nomination, which has also been endorsed by ACCEA and the RCP London, and is therefore asking members who wish BCS to consider nominating them for a national award to complete a CVQ and to return this to distinctionawards@bcs.com by 6 September 2010. Please note that the ACCEA Committee place particular emphasis on work achievements since any previous award was made. Please download the forms from the bottom of this page.
Before deciding whether to self-nominate it is worth considering the few guidance notes that there are. Local support is essential. Thus, an application for a national Bronze award (Level 9) is seldom, if ever, successful if the candidate does not already hold at least 4 local points. In addition, those holding national awards are very unlikely to move up a level in less than 5 years from the start of their existing award. Finally, BCS cannot make direct nominations for platinum awards but can and will make recommendations to the Presidents of the Royal Medical Colleges.
All the CVQs that are sent to us will be scored and ranked by the BCS Board, including lay representatives, in accordance with the methodologies laid out by ACCEA. The final BCS list of nominees (in rank order) will then be forwarded to the appropriate advisory body, as well as the relevant Royal College. Those being supported will be notified and should let their Trust know that they have won the support of the BCS.
The scheme allows the National Specialist Societies to nominate only a relatively small number of candidates. Last year, for example, we were limited to 10 nominations for bronze and 5 for silver/gold awards in England. Inevitably this is far fewer than the number of consultants whom we consider to merit an award (and smaller than the number who will actually achieve one); hence the importance of organising a system that allows every case to be considered carefully and fairly.
If you would like the Society to support your application for an award you need to be an existing member of the BCS and must complete one of the attached CV Questionnaires. Please complete the 2011 SACDA form if you are working in Scotland and use the 2011 RCP (and if necessary the supplementary questionnaires on either Research or Teaching/Training) if you work elsewhere. You can of course cut and paste material from these forms if you are also seeking the support of other nominating bodies. Please ensure that you emphasise any activities that you have undertaken for the Society or its Affiliated Groups, the RCP, BHF, ESC or other national or international organisations and, if applicable, highlight contributions that you have made since your last award.
After completing the appropriate forms return them by email to distinctionawards@bcs.com by 6September. The forms should not be sent directly to ACCEA or SACDA. In the interest of fairness and for the review process to have time to work the BCS will be unable to consider CVQs that do not reach us by 6 September.
Finally, it would be very helpful if you check that your details on the Societys database are correct; this can be done by going to http://www.bcs.com .
This letter is being e-mailed to all BCS members so please ignore it if it does not apply to you. If you know any members of the BCS who are eligible for an award but are not aware of these arrangements please ask them to contact the Society directly through distinctionawards@bcs.com .
With kind regards
Yours sincerely
Prof Keith A A Fox President, British Cardiovascular Society
